What Is a CIBIL Score?

A CIBIL score (or credit score) is a 3-digit number between 300 and 900 that summarises your credit history. Lenders use it as the primary tool to decide whether to approve a loan and at what interest rate.
Score RangeRatingImpact on Loan
750–900ExcellentBest rates, fast approval
700–749GoodSlightly higher rates
650–699FairFewer lenders, higher rate
Below 650PoorLikely rejection or very high rate

How Your Score Affects Your Rate

A 50-point difference in credit score can change your interest rate by 0.5–1.5%. On a ₹50L home loan for 20 years:
  • At 8.5% → Total interest ≈ ₹55.8L
  • At 9.5% → Total interest ≈ ₹63.8L
  • Difference: ₹8L over the loan life
  • What Hurts Your Credit Score

  • Late or missed EMI/credit card payments (biggest factor, ~35% weight)
  • High credit utilisation (using >30% of credit limit)
  • Multiple loan applications in a short period (hard enquiries)
  • Loan settlements (marks as "settled" instead of "closed")
  • What Improves Your Score

  • Paying EMIs and credit card bills before the due date, every month
  • Keeping credit card utilisation below 30%
  • Maintaining a mix of secured (home/car) and unsecured (personal/CC) credit
  • Not closing old credit accounts (length of history matters)
  • Checking your CIBIL report annually and disputing errors
  • Getting a Loan With a Low Score

Options when your score is below 700:
  • Apply with a co-applicant who has a strong credit history
  • Offer a larger down payment (reduces lender risk)
  • Choose NBFCs — they typically have more flexible criteria than PSU banks
  • First build score with a secured credit card for 6–12 months, then apply
  • Pro Tip

Run a free CIBIL soft check on the official CIBIL website before applying — it does not affect your score and helps you spot errors before a lender does.
